Australian students to study art in Bali – Dozens of students from the University of Western Australia (UWA) will be studying at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) in Denpasar, Bali, in the near future, the institute says in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post recently.

The students will be studying percussion, dance and painting as a part of a student exchange program.

This statement came from ISI Denpasar Rector I Wayan Rai. S recently. The arrival of foreign students was regarded by I Wayan sebagay as a challenge for the ISI professors.

“I notice staff are starting to speak in English. These habits should be maintained,” I Wayan said, adding that UWA students would arrive at the end of February, after the signing of an MoU between both parties at the UWA campus.

Crop circles found in Yogya rice field – A large circle and geometric pattern local residents say were created by a UFO have been found in a rice field in Krasakan hamlet in Sleman, Yogyakarta.

The circles and triangle in the rice paddy next to a residential area look resemble a geometric artwork, while the other parts of the field remain intact.

The crop circles were first reported by a farmer, Tukiman, on Sunday at 6 a.m.

Sleman Police chief Adj.Sr.Com. Iwan Ramaini said he was not sure if the circles were created by a UFO or if it was a natural phenomenon. A police investigation is underway. ( thejakartapost.com )

Facebook and Twitter ‘Make Us Less Human’ – They call themselves social networking sites but now it appears that the likes of Twitter and Facebook could be downright anti-social. A leading academic claims that the technology is threatening to dominate our lives, making us more isolated and ‘less human’.

Professor Sherry Turkle has even branded the use of the social networking sites a form of ‘modern madness‘. She argues that, under the illusion of allowing us to communicate better, technology is isolating us from real human interactions in a cyber-reality that is a poor imitation of the real world.

Professor Turkle, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the U.S., is leading an attack on the information age with her book Alone Together.

The professor even suggests social networking can make us mad, citing ‘pathological behaviour’ she has witnessed, such as mourners at funerals checking their iPhones. Her book is part of an intellectual backlash in America calling for the people to devote less time to sites such as Twitter.

Other American academics have criticised the growing trend of internet activity. One, Professor William Kist, of Kent State University in Ohio, has cited the death in Brighton of Simone Back who posted her suicide note on Facebook at Christmas.

Not one of 42-year-old Miss Back’s 1,058 ‘friends’ on the site called for help. Instead they traded insults on her page.
